Have you ever watched that film ‘Zulu’? Where a small makeshift garrison of British soldiers and their Allies fight off wave after wave of vicious Zulu’s – in the process wiping out an entire army.\012\012We went into this match with the other half of our team in Bintan for a pissup to celebrate our Captain’s birthday. The 11 Gemuks remaining on this island were assembled to form an improvised squad without any substitutions to hand. We still had quality though with a strong midfield and the ever present Andy Croll on hand to lead the defence. Kefford saved us from certain humiliation by recovering from a major operation in under 24 hours to take up his position in goal. The experienced \012Tetsuki took up the role of Captain to direct a team playing largely out of our natural positions.\012\012In the opening stages of the match the two teams appeared to be of reasonably similar ability with the respective attack and defensive formations canceling each other out. \012\012Then on the 12th minute when a brilliant individual effort from Keir saw him go wide around the keeper and score from a near impossible angle. \012\012The game continuted in a closely matched fashion before a goal line scramble saw the ball in the back of the net after I deflected a crisp low drive from Frank which was perhaps heading directly for their Goal Keeper.\012\012At that point SP99’s discipline fell apart and it was truly the beginning of the end for our savage opponents. A second yellow card for verbal abuse saw a key player given his marching orders. Then before the end of the first half a double footed challenge on \012Gaffer resulted in another of the warrior’s seeing red.\012\012The half time whistle went without any \012chance of a decent rest – we were without the luxury of any subs. Despite only being 9 men SP99 launched wave after wave of fierce attacks. Only a number of amazing saves by the ever reliable Jamie Kefford kept us in the match and held our morale steady. \012\012The inevitable soon materliased though \012when towards the middle of the half Tetsuki managed to sneak around their over stretched defence and calmly slot a goal after a brilliant one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Benoit followed suit in a near identical fashion a few minutes later. 4-0 and the game was over.\012\012Jamie Kefford was awarded man of the \012match for keeping a clean sheet and pulling off some brave saves in one-on-one situations. Tetsuki lead the troops well and his good instructions helped guide us towards victory. Sunil was as steady and strong as ever, despite playing out of position as centre back. Khaled came out of retirement to play a superb game as left back and saw more of the ball than any other player. Frank also proved his point as \012striker by setting up one goal and delivering a couple of highly accurate crosses.\012\012We should be proud of this victory. \012Everybody played above their ability and lasted the full 80 minutes without complaint, even after suffering some hard tackles. This was an improvised team lacking a large number of key players – we still won 4-0 which is perhaps our greatest achievement \012to date.\012\012Our opponents played a good game and \012matched us throughout the first half. The difference was that we were the more disciplined side so did not rise to their brutal physical and verbal attacks. Credit to the ref for keeping control of the match.\012\012All the best to SP99 in which ever division you guys are playing in next season. You are truly tough opponents and are relieved that we are unlikely to be playing you again.\012
